Children's Hospital Mother's Day Donations - Thank you so much!

As many of you know, I am an adult coloring book illustrator and owner of Coffee and Coloring.  I started Coffee and Coloring when I discovered how much coloring helped me manager my anxiety.  I wanted to help others find way to deal with stress, anxiety, or just life in general.

My child was a patient at Monroe Carroll Jr. Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital many times when he was an infant toddler due to a seizure disorder and other ailments.  I knew how stressful sitting in a hospital room day in and day out worrying over your child could be.  I decided to raise donations for adult coloring books to give to the mother’s of the children at the hospital for Mother’s day.  I wanted to bring a little joy, if only for a brief moment to the mothers who were dealing with the stress of their children during this holiday.  I reached out to colorists and other illustrators around the world and asked for donations for this cause.

I was amazed at the amount of donations.  Colorists from around the world donated over 100 coloring sheets, and 900 crayons.  I donated over 100 copies of her adult coloring books, including Inspired by Nature and her newest coloring book, Whimsical Patterns, Vol. 1, the bags to hold the goodies in, over 500 colored pencils, and 50 pencil sharpeners. Between illustrators Anne Manera, Andrea Schmitz, Sue Chastain, Heidi Berthiaume, Alice Jackson, Tamera Cameron, Melanie Topp Steeves, and Maria Castro over 250 coloring books, 100 colorable post cards, 50 clip boards, and other coloring related items were donated.

Due to the large number of donations from everyone, I was able to not only raise the amount of Adult Coloring Mother’s Day packets that Vanderbilt requested, but also had enough left over to donate packets to the post partum floor of St. Thomas of Rutherford.

Because of these donations mothers at both hospitals were able to get a special package to enjoy while caring for their child for their child during an extremely stressful time in their lives.

Ever thought about coloring grayscale images?

Ever thought about coloring grayscale images?

I have been seeing colorist post the absolutely realistic images that they've colored all over Facebook.  Well, you know me, I had to find out how they did it.  I started chatting with one of the members of a Facebook group that had posted this type of image.  It turns out, she had colored a grayscale coloring book.

I started researching this type of coloring, and tried my hands at a few, and I was hooked.  So hook actually that I have a whole series of this type of coloring book planned for 2016.

Coloring a grayscale image can be intimidating at first, but just let your creativity flow by following the natural highlights and shadows.  The image has done all of the hard work of figuring out where the lights and darks should be; use it as a guide to bring the image to life.

If this peaks your interest take a look at the tutorial below that shows how to color in a grayscale image.  As a bonus, I've included a copy of the kitten from this video so you can color along side me and try out these techniques!

Get your copy of the kitten I'm coloring in the tutorial here.
